Download: Remote Touch Beta2

You can download Remote Touch Beta2 now.

Summary of Changes:
+ Memory Architecture Overhaul.
+ Improved Keyboard.
+ IP & Domain Name (DNS) support.

Memory Architecture Overhaul

HTC Diamond and Touch HD users would have had problems running Remote Touch Beta due to it's high memory usage. Beta2 should fix this by allocating a lot less memory. Memory allocated in Beta2 is around 50% less than Beta1. Also the largest allocation size in Beta2 is around 90% smaller. I hope this fixes issues people had on the HTC Diamond. It would be great if someone could confirm this.

Improved Keyboard

Beta2 keyboard doesn't actually add any new keys. Beta1 already had most of the standard keys. Beta2 however provides better interaction. Try pressing the shift key in the Remote Touch keyboard and you will know what I am talking about.

IP & Web Address Support

This is a VERY useful feature allowing you to use both IP Address (e.g. 1.2.3.4) or DNS Name (e.g johnsmith.no-ip.biz) in the Remote Touch on your Windows mobile. This will allow you to setup your PC, so you can connect to it using Remote Touch from anywhere on the planet whether your ISP uses a static or dynamic IP address !! Have a look at No-IP on how to setup your PC.

Great Programm, I've got a HTC Touch Diamond, and waited for your Beta2 with the fix for VGA since I read about RemoteTouch.
I can proof, that NOW RemoteTouch Beta2 works fine on this device.
Thank you very much for your fast updates. Screen rotating (landscape format) would be nice because gsen doesn't work together with RemoteTouch.

hi. Don't know if I'm being thick here, but how do you set this (or standard remote desktop) up to connect to a PC connected via a wireless router? I assume my machine's IP address will be identical to the others on the router, so I'll need the IP address of the router plus the IP address of the machine from the router, right? Or should correct router port forwarding send the data through to the correct machine?

www.canyouseeme.org can see the default RemoteTouch port with my IP so the firewall and forwarding must be set up right (right?). I manually changed the remotetouch ip address from default (internal address to from router) to the actual external address but still nothing.

Any tips appreciated. Cheers
si

@Si:

I suggest you first get it working with the wireless router in your house/office before trying to get it working externally.

Also make sure your phone is able to connect to the network through the wireless router.

See if the installation video helps:

Gluck !

Hi Sanjay, thanks for the tips. I hope I'm not being really dense here: my mobile's connecting to the net via the wireless network, i've disabled the host firewall and opened port 3230 in the router setup to allow inbound TCP from any WAN users. I still fail server authentication. I just can't work out what more I need to do with this, or remote desktop. I can remote desktop connect from another machine on the LAN, I've setup the ports correctly, it's not the firewall, terminal services is running, netstat says the machine's listening on port 3230 (from a foreign address @ no-ip.com...is that supposed to be the case?), and enabled XP SP3 network level authentication.
Cheers in advance for any help man, I'm getting to the point where (if I get this to work) I'm considering writing a guide to all the pitfalls of remote access!

@Si:

So you are getting a server authentication failure ? That would mean you have actually got your connection all setup.

Is the password between your server and mobile the same ? If are using a password, try without it, if you aren't try with it. :)

Gluck !

Sanjay, thank man - some progress!
Buggy start but now it's working. Seems that when it fires up it doesn't do anything and the top half of the top info bar (using HTC Touch HD) is still there. If I hit 'ok' and the the home key, it briefly closes out of Remote Touch but RT then steals the focus back and goes full-screen and works.
Great prog man, really impressed. Some thoughts so far:
-option to make the menu bar a little bigger as it's tough to hit, even with the stylus
-ability to select menu items without having to deselect scroll (probably also true for overview)
-overview: option to have either current 'drag aspect ratio' as well as a similar thing where you can either tap or drag and it'll maintain aspect ratio. Having everything stretched all the time seems odd.
-multiple monitor support. probably tough to do? could be part of the overview menu.
-option to switch between speed & quality options within the interface,i.e. don't need to restart
-option to use mobile's integrated keyboard - this way you can see what you're typing!
-menu option to minimise so that you can do other stuff and come back to remote touch
-(already mentioned) integration with gsen for landscape mode would be cool. Currently the whole interface turns which means that the RT menu bar disappears off the screen.

Haha, yeah so lots of things I think would make it better, but already it's a great start.
So where do I go from here in terms of running it remotely?

Thanks Sanjay!

Simon

From remote location?

@Si

Thanks for the long post !
I think you have downloaded an older version (& hence why you post on beta2 all the time). There are 2 newer version the latest being version 1.1. See the download buttons on the side bar or near the top of this blog.

A lot of the things you mentioned are either on my todo list or already fixed in a future version.

Try it out !

As for connecting remotely:

Whhoooooaaa~ awesome! Suggestions for future dev:

Have navigation similar to Skyfire or the minimap in a corner like the Microsoft wm remote dekstop app.

Also, keyboard support (for devices like Tilt). =]

Sanjay Thomas said...

@Anonymous:

Hope you have upgraded past Beta2.
You are 3 versions behind !

Thanks for the feed back.
Keyboard support will only be in the Commercial version.
As for minimap, that's a great idea.
Actually even before I made Beta version public, I had a minimap and found it too small to use effectively, so I made the overview mode instead. I might have the option of a minimap in the future.

@Anonymous:

Just use the default port of 3230.
That is usually available. If not, then another port like 3231.
